Students in the 8th grade Art classes get the opportunity to delve even deeper into technical skills working with a wide variety of media.  Students will get more involved in understanding the reasons why we create art.  Whether its an artist's response to a previous art style, recognizing what our culture sees as "popular", or using Art as a voice to speak out about social issues, the 8th grade students will gain knowledge in all of these topics.

Students will have the chance to drip their paint like Abstract Expressionist, Jackson Pollock.  They will learn about the Mexican holiday of the "Day of the Dead" (Los Dias de los Muertos) and see how elements of that culture have crossed over to the United States.  Students will use clay to create a piece of artwork to be auctioned off to address the issue of hunger in Western New York (The Empty Bowls Auction).  They will give old books new life in creating a sculpture out of old, discarded, library texts that otherwise would have met their end in the incinerator!

8th Grade Art students can also join Art Club in April and have the last three months of the school year to create a ceiling tile.  These ceiling tiles have been a long standing tradition in both the Middle School and High School for our Art students.  Students paint them with the subject of their choice and have them hung in a place of their choosing (a teacher's room or one of our halls) for permanent display.  If you get the chance to visit, you should check out some of the amazing work that decorate our ceilings here!
